Gem & Upper Morgan Lakes [2-3 Days]
The hike to Upper Morgan Lake in Inyo National Forest follows the well-maintained Little Lakes Valley trail from Mosquito Flats and offers steady, gradual elevation with constant scenery. Early on, you pass Marsh Lake and Heart Lake, then continue alongside Box Lake and the broad shoreline of Long Lake, where open granite slopes and high peaks reflect cleanly in the water. Higher up, the trail threads through meadows and talus near Chickenfoot Lake and the clustered Gem Lakes, giving the route a natural rhythm of water, rock, and sky.
From Morgan Pass, a short descent leads to Upper Morgan Lake, tucked into a quiet basin below rugged ridgelines. The setting feels spacious and alpine rather than dramatic—clear water, open views, and crisp mountain air. It’s a straightforward, rewarding hike that combines easy walking with classic Sierra scenery, making it ideal for a peaceful overnight destination. Camp at Gem Lake and day hike to Upper Morgan to make this a 3 day ultimate relaxing Sierra backpacking adventure or beginers trek!
